Yes it is totally possible to listen to books on a Kindle ereader and Kindle app without audible. In this guide you'll get to know several ways to have your Kindle ereader read books aloud to you and how to make your phone read books on the Kindle app. So, let’s get started
1. Listen to books on a Kindle eReader
To make your Kindle ereader read your books aloud you have to use the VoiceView screen reader feature (Text To Speech) To use it you have to connect your Kindle to a pair of Bluetooth headphones and follow the steps below -
- Go to Settings > Accessibility
- Select VoiceView screen reader - and turn it on.
Now its on, you also get a tutorial option to learn how it works, Below that you get the option to increase and decrease the speech rate and level of volume. Under that we have the Bluetooth device option from where you can connect your Bluetooth headphones.
But there is a catch, to select any option you must first tap it once and then double tap to confirm. Now text to speech is enabled on your Kindle. You can open a book and it will start reading to you. Just plug in your headphones to listen.
If you want it to read a page continuously, you need to draw an 'L' shape on the screen and it will start playing.
2. Listen to books on the Kindle app (Android and iPhone)
Using Amazon Alexa App
You can listen to books directly through the Alexa app on your phone or tablet. For this you need the Alexa app. Download it from the Play Store or App store and log in into your account or create one. Now follow these steps -
- Open the Alexa app and go to the 'More' Tab
- Select 'Settings'
- Within settings tap on 'Accessibility'
- Then turn on 'Kindle Assistive reader'
- Now go to 'More' again
- Tap on 'Music & More'
- Then scroll down to Kindle Library
- Choose a book to listen to and select 'This Device' and it will start playing.
Using TalkBack/Text to Speech
Alternatively you can also use TalkBack or text to speech on your phone. (Works on both Android and iOS), When you enable Talkback your phone will read out loud everything appearing on the screen.
To enable talkback -
- Go to Settings > accessibility > Talkback, and turn it on.
- You can also customize speech rate, volume and voice there.
- After it is enabled. Open your book in the kindle app and it will read it aloud.
3. Listen to Kindle books on PC
The Kindle app can read a book to you using the text to speech feature on your PC. You just have to follow these steps -
- Install the Kindle app on your PC
- Open the book you want to listen to
- Go to "Tools" Menu and enable the "Read aloud" feature or press CTRL + Shift + U
- Now you can listen to your book.
If the Kindle PC app Glitches or doesn't work properly
The audible app has been discontinued on PC, and the Kindle app doesn't receive frequent updates, if you happen to find any problem accessing books within the Kindle app you can try the Kindle Cloud Reader from where you can access and read your books directly using a browser on any device without the need to install any app. But you won't be able to download books for offline reading with Kindle Cloud Reader.
