❌ Say No to Dowry! It’s illegal, unethical, and kills thousands of dreams every year.
“Asking for dowry is like pricing yourself like a product - don’t do it.”
Dowry (Dahej) In India
Dowry - the age-old practice where the bride's family gives money, property, or valuable gifts to the groom’s family, surprisingly it's still a thing in Indian society. Although the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 made this custom illegal, the harsh reality is that dowry related harassment, violence, and deaths remain widespread even today.
📜 What Is Dowry?
Dowry, or dahej in Hindi, refers to the transfer of parental property, gifts, or money during the marriage of a daughter. While traditionally viewed as a gesture of goodwill, it has evolved into a social burden and a tool of extortion in many cases.
⚖️ Dowry Is Illegal - But Still Exists
In 1961, the Indian government enacted the Dowry Prohibition Act, which criminalizes the giving, taking, or demanding of dowry. Further protection is provided under:
- Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC): Punishment for dowry deaths
- Section 498A of the IPC: Cruelty by husband or his relatives due to dowry demands
Despite these laws, thousands of families still face the emotional and financial trauma of dowry related abuse.
🤔Why Does Dowry Still Exists?
Social pressure: Families believe giving dowry ensures a “good” match.
Gender inequality: Daughters are seen as a financial burden.
Weak law enforcement: Many cases go unreported or ignored.
Greed and entitlement: Some grooms' families view marriage as a way to gain wealth.
What Can We Do?
- Refuse to give or accept dowry - start with your own family.
- Speak out against friends or relatives who support the practice.
- Report abuse to the police or women's helplines.
- Educate others through social media, schools, and communities.
Dowry is not a tradition, it is a crime disguised as custom. Every voice raised against dowry brings us one step closer to a society where marriage is a union of love not a business transaction.
