“Asking for dowry is like pricing yourself like a product - don’t do it.”
Dowry - the age-old practice where the bride's family gives money, property, or valuable gifts to the groom’s family, surprisingly it's still a thing in Indian society. Although the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 made this custom illegal, the harsh reality is that dowry related harassment, violence, and deaths remain widespread even today.
Dowry, or dahej in Hindi, refers to the transfer of parental property, gifts, or money during the marriage of a daughter. While traditionally viewed as a gesture of goodwill, it has evolved into a social burden and a tool of extortion in many cases.
In 1961, the Indian government enacted the Dowry Prohibition Act, which criminalizes the giving, taking, or demanding of dowry. Further protection is provided under:
Despite these laws, thousands of families still face the emotional and financial trauma of dowry related abuse.
Social pressure: Families believe giving dowry ensures a “good” match.
Gender inequality: Daughters are seen as a financial burden.
Weak law enforcement: Many cases go unreported or ignored.
Greed and entitlement: Some grooms' families view marriage as a way to gain wealth.
Refuse to give or accept dowry - start with your own family.
Speak out against friends or relatives who support the practice.
Report abuse to the police or women's helplines.
Educate others through social media, schools, and communities.
Dowry is not a tradition, it is a crime disguised as custom. Every voice raised against dowry brings us one step closer to a society where marriage is a union of love not a business transaction.
