Design

Remarkable Paper Pro is larger in size as it has a bigger screen and the bar present on the left of Remarkable 2 is absent in the Paper Pro. The Remarkable 2 weighs 407 gram while the Remarkable Paper Pro is 522 Gram, major weight gain in the upgrade. Also the Remarkable 2 is slimmer than the Remarkable Paper Pro. Here are the dimensions of both tabs -
  • Remarkable 2 - 188 x 246 x 4.7 mm
  • Remarkable Paper Pro - 196.6 x 274.1 x 5.1 mm

The Display

Remarkable 2 has a 10.3" E-ink screen with no frontlight, and the Paper Pro has a 11.8" color e-ink screen, marketed as a Canvas color display with 229ppi on both BW and Color content.

Unlike the Remarkable 2 The screen on the Paper Pro now has a frontlight which is an essential feature. You can increase and decrease it which is again extremely useful in the dark. However it lacks warm and cool light adjustment option.

Writing experience

Both device comes with a stylus - standard Marker Pen, which can be used for writing and can be charged by magnetically attaching to the Right side of the device. Coming to the writing experience, the Paper Pro feels a bit rougher than the Remarkable 2. Writing on the Remarkable 2 feels a little softer than the Paper Pro. Remarkable 2 was already a paperlike device but The Paper pro takes it to the next level.

Some people might find the writing on the Paper Pro a bit too rough. Also the Pen input is a little faster along with faster navigation, it's because of the new upgraded Quad core NXP iMX8 Mini Processor  and the 2GB RAM. In comparison, The Remarkable 2 has a dual core CPU and a 1GB of RAM. As You can see, its obvious that the Paper Pro is faster in every task.

Note - The Remarkable 2s Marker Pen doesn't work on the Remarkable Paper Pro

Typing and Touch response

If you don't use the Marker Pen and type with your hand, the touch response is still better on the Remarkable Paper Pro. Additionally, the display shows slightly sharper text compared to the Remarkable 2, although its not a very noticeable difference. but still when you read manga and comics and zoom in you can see the difference.

Internal storage

The Remarkable 2 has only 8GB of storage (6GB available for user) which may not be so good if you want to store a lot of books and files. But on the Paper Pro you get 64GB of storage (46.32 available for user) which is 8 times larger than the Remarkable 2.

Battery life

The Remarkable 2 features a 3000 mAh battery that takes approximately 120 minutes to fully charge and the Paper Pro is powered by a 5030 mAh cell, which can be charged fully in around 90 minutes. Both devices gives around 2 weeks of battery life on moderate use, can even last longer if used efficiently (like turning off auto sync, not using frontlight) Remarkable Paper Pro has a bigger battery but its larger screen and frontlight also consumes more power, that's why ultimately it gives identical backup on a single full charge.

Who is it for?

The Remarkable Paper Pro is designed for people who wants a note taking device with paper like writing experience, manga and comic lovers and people who likes drawing.

Why Choose the Paper Pro over Remarkable 2?

Because it's better but also more expensive but it's worth the money for the added features. Such as -

  1. A faster processor and improved performance. Many people using the Remarkable 2 faces lag and freezing issues because of it's weaker CPU, if you already own a Remarkable 2 and thinking of upgrading , I'm sure you have also faced lag and freezing on the Remarkable 2.
  2. The other upgrade is the Color screen, with a color screen you can enjoy color manga, comics and graphic novels, It also enhances the experience of drawing and digital art.
  3. How can we forget the LED backlight, it's a totally useful feature in low light and dark conditions.

For many people 11.8" might be too big, so the choice depends on you. You have to decide what you want. While it is for sure an upgrade over the Remarkable 2. And I know it's costly compared to other brands like Onyx Boox and Kindle but it gives a true paper like experience. If price is not a problem, the Paper Pro is a great option., it's definitely better than the Remarkable 2 in many aspects.

I hope this comparison helped you get some clarity on which one to buy. Your feedback is very important for me and I'd appreciate getting your thoughts on this.
